Killer Whale Expeditions
Marine Boy Productions have been successfully filming Killer Whales underwater for many years. These expeditions are led by Robert Torelli and destinations include both New Zealand and the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales (Australia's south east coast). All expeditions are done under strict permit conditions from both Department of Conservation in New Zealand and the relevant State and Federal authorities in Australia.
Marine Boy Productions have seen Killer Whales on an amazing 78% of all of our field trips. These Killer Whales are typically seen in clear water (20 plus meters visibility). At times visibility exceeds 30 meters. The best time of the year is March-June. These expeditions need to be planned well in advance to provide sufficient time to process the permit applications, secure charter boats, etc. Both live aboard and day trips are catered for.
There are opportunities to film the Killer Whales in small family groups from a few animals up to 15 Killer Whales at once. On a number of occasions we have encountered the Killer whales feeding on Sunfish, Stingrays and deep water reef species.
In recent years Robert Torelli and his team at Marine Boy Productions have led a number of successful expeditions to film killer whales in crystal clear water. In 2007 Robert led (and helped film) Killer Whales off New Zealand for 3D Entertainment for their feature 3D film titled “Dolphins and Whales 3D”. This is now showing at IMAX cinemas across the globe.
In April / May 2008 Robert Torelli again led an expedition back to New Zealand for French film company Galatee Films. This segment was for their feature documentary “Oceans”. Again, this shoot was successful with regular Killer Whale encounters along with False Killer Whales, Pilot Whales, Sperm Whales, Brydes Whales, Sei Whales and a host of beaked whales and dolphins. Marine Boy Productions have reliable contacts and a unique and proven way of regularly encountering Killer Whales in the clear open waters.
