Southern Right Whale Expeditions
Marine Boy Productions can arrange opportunities to film the highly endangered Southern Right Whale along the south east coast of Australia. These customised expeditions are led by Robert Torelli and David Donnelly and destinations include select parts of the Victorian coastline along with the southern coastline of New South Wales. All expeditions are done under strict permit conditions from the relevant State and Federal authorities in Australia.
Southern Right Whales feed in the nutrient rich waters of the Sub-Antarctic during summer months before making their way north to the calving grounds of southern Australia arriving between May and June.
Seasonally, Southern Right Whales can be found from Sydney NSW through to Western Australia. Marine Boy Productions have a strong network of “spotters” who assist in the location of these whales. Filming opportunities exist to film Southern Right Whales both underwater and above water from both the land and also boats. Southern Right Whales leave southern Australia to return to the Sub-Antarctic in September/October each year.
Whilst around Australia the Southern Right Whale is typically found along the coastline, close to shore. They are often seen in clear water, i.e. (15- 20 meters visibility). These photographic expeditions need to be planned well in advance to provide sufficient time to process the permit applications, secure charter boats, etc. All filming expeditions are done as day trips on charter vessels or as day trips along the cliffs.
There are great opportunities to film Southern Right Whales performing all the usual behaviours such as breaching, spy hopping, tail lobbing, fluking, etc. Mother and calf interaction is also possible along with interactions with fur seals.
